The lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chairman House Committee on Defense, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, on Saturday, held the pre-commissioning of his new initiative, IKD 106.1FM, a community radio station.
The event had in attendance His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, the Ayangbure of Ikorodu and other Obas in the division. They included His Royal Majesties Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, Oba Ajibade Bakare Agoro, the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya, the Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Oba Bashir Sotonwa, the Sekumade of Ipakodo and Oba David Raji Balogun, the Eweye of lsiwu, and a host of other traditional chiefs.
The community radio station, which officially commenced transmission on Sunday, March 7, 2021, is located within the lawmaker’s constituency office at Plot 48, Ebute-Igbogbo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos.
The monarchs and other guests were welcomed to the radio station by the founder of the radio station, Rep. Benson and the General Manager of the station, Mr Adeniyi Taiwo Kunnu.
While welcoming the monarchs, Mr Kunnu said the radio station was a means to propagate Ikorodu to the outside world, adding that it reaches its audience in four languages: Yoruba, English, Pidgin English as well as Ijebu dialect.
Speaking during the visit, Oba Shotobi appreciated Rep Benson for the initiative, saying that the lawmaker is towing the path laid by his late uncle and former Minister for Communications, Chief TOS Benson, SAN, who facilitated the Voice of Nigeria (VON) to Ikorodu.
“I am proud that Babajimi Benson has brought about this initiative and created healthy rivalry with existing radio stations in Ikorodu some of which were started by Ikorodu sons. This is good for our development,” the monarch said.
“He is following in the footsteps of his forebears in the Benson family in information management, especially TOS Benson who was a major player in facilitation of Voice of Nigeria to Ikorodu.”
The monarch added that the radio station will create job opportunities for sons and daughters of Ikorodu, particularly those in the field of journalism.
In the same vein, Oba Agoro praised the lawmaker for using his good office to further his good work of developing Ikorodu, saying the initiative is a major success for the people of Ikorodu. Other Obas in their respective remarks commended Rep. Benson and prayed for the success of the radio station.
