Israel Adesanya breaks ‘Drake Curse’ after defending UFC title

Not only did Nigerian-born martial artist, Israel Adesanya retain his UFC 276 middleweight title in a spectacular style on Sunday morning, the Last Stylebender also broke the ‘Drake Curse’.

For the uninitiated, the ‘Drake Curse’ happens when teams or individuals suffer bad luck or defeat after associating with the Grammy-winning singer, Drake.

Nigerian-born British professional boxer, Anthony Joshua was a victim of the curse after he took a picture with the Canadian rapper before his first fight against Andy Ruiz in New York. AJ lost the game.

When Drake placed a huge bet on Adesanya to win, his fans started to worry. Drake placed a whooping $1 million bet on the Nigerian’s victory and even spoke with him via FaceTime a day before the bout.

The 32-year-old, however, survived the curse and outclassed his American challenger, Jared Cannonier to secure a well-deserved unanimous decision victory (49–46, 49–46, 50–45) to retain his title after five rounds.

While Adesanya secured a record twelfth consecutive victory as a middleweight in the UFC, Drake’s bad luck in gambling came to an end as the rapper won the $1 million bet.
