Since the start of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, citizens of Nigeria have become no strangers to complaints.
This week, it’s a sudden hike in the prices of goods and services and the next, kidnapping and other insecurity-related problems.
These abnormalities have led Nigerians to cry for a change in governance and conclude that there have never been worst years than the 7 years of President Buhari’s administration and he has received the term, ‘Nigeria’s worst President’.
Are Nigerian citizens logical to conclude this?
Let’s clarify this by tracing Buhari’s administration and welfare to past governance by previous Nigerian rulers.
Since Nigeria’s inception of civilian rule(democracy), the best times yet were recorded during the short-lived administration of the Ex-president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The Vanguard records that it was only during Yar’Adua’s reign that the price of fuel was not increased but reduced to #65 from #75.
According to WithinNigeria, Yar’Adua was the first person to declare his asset which was done to discourage Nigerians from corruption.
Yar’Adua also created the Seven Point Agenda which included security, wealth creation through diversification of the economy and the development of the Niger Delta among others.
Although he did not live to achieve them all, Ripple Nigeria recorded that his reign brought a new era of peace and stability in the Niger Delta as well as the country as a whole.
His administration rekindled the hopes of Nigerians but this hope was dampened by his death.
However, this hope was slowly rekindled when President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration came to light.
The administration canvassed ‘change’ and ‘next level’ to Nigerians which won the heart of the citizens.
Upon assumption of office in May 2015, the President promised Nigerians the creation of job opportunities and an end to corruption and insecurity in the state.
How much of this so-called change did Nigerians witness?
Contrary to the President’s claim of change, Nigeria has witnessed a general increase in insecurity, corruption and unemployment to mention a few.
According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, food inflation accelerated to 22.02 in Buhari’s administration.
A bag of rice that was sold at #8,567 before 2015 is now #45,000.
There have also been university strikes lasting for nearly a year in the administration and the price of dollars is currently at #445.47 as opposed to #180.199 in 2015.
The administration has also witnessed a massive increase in the price of fuel from #87 to #250.
Lest to say, insecurity has skyrocketed and no part of the country is spared.
These metrics show that the Presidency has only successfully lived up to bringing negative change rather that the positive change it campaigned for.
It is safe to say therefore that since its inception till date, Nigeria has had the poorest presidency yet under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration making him arguably the worst president the country has ever had.
