The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially unveiled the timetable and key dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, setting out the schedule for presidential, legislative, and governorship polls ahead of the next election cycle.
The announcement was made on Friday by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan at a press briefing in Abuja, where he outlined the dates and activities designed to guide political stakeholders and eligible voters through the electoral process.
The Presidential and National Assembly Elections will hold on Saturday, February 20, 2027 while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will hold on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
INEC’s timetable also includes a full sequence of electoral activities leading up to the polls, such as party primaries, candidate nominations, and public campaigns.
While the commission has set these dates, officials caution that some elements particularly deadlines tied to candidate listing could be adjusted if changes to the Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly are enacted.
Prof. Amupitan told reporters that the early release of the timetable is meant to boost planning efficiency, reduce uncertainty, and ensure all stakeholders from political parties to civil society organisations have clarity well ahead of the polls.
He emphasised INEC’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections, noting that preparations will include updating the voter register, deploying technology for identification and results collation, and intensifying voter education across the country.
With the 2027 general elections now less than two years away, Nigerians are encouraged to check and update their voter registration details and engage meaningfully in the democratic process.
