On Monday, 9th September 2024, Vice Chairman Olajide Abiodun of the NBA Ikorodu Branch, alongside the Human Rights Committee and the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme (PDSS ) team, conducted a thorough visitation to Owode Onirin Police Station and Owutu Police Station.

The visitation aim was to evaluate compliance with human rights standards in suspect detention and to resolve concerns about prolonged detention.

However, at Owode Onirin Police Station, two suspects detained for conspiracy and obtaining under false pretenses were identified on the Crime Board. The DPO assured the team that these cases had been resolved, with imminent plans for the suspects’ release.

Additionally, seven individuals detained for disorderly conduct following a recent police raid were identified. Two other detainees awaited processing pending interviews.

Similarly, at Owutu Police Station, the visit revealed ten suspects facing charges including theft, conspiracy, and assault. Notably, two suspects involved in a theft case were slated for resolution.

The visit also highlighted a case involving a minor accused of theft, who claimed to have acted under the direction of another detainee, a claim disputed by the latter.

The visitation highlighted concerns regarding prolonged detention, prompting proactive measures to ensure fair treatment of suspects. Vice Chairman Olajide Abiodun reaffirmed the NBA Ikorodu Branch’s commitment to ongoing monitoring and advocacy for equitable treatment within police facilities.

The monthly police station visitation aligns with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 (as amended), mandating regular inspections by the chief magistrate within their jurisdiction to prevent arbitrary detention. The PDSS, or Police Duty Solicitors Scheme, plays a vital role in providing legal consultations and ensuring suspects are appropriately charged or released on bail as required.

In reaffirming these efforts, the Vice Chairman of the NBA Ikorodu Branch’s Human Rights Committee, emphasized, “It is my duty to ensure compliance with these visits and protect human rights,” underscoring the NBA’s dedication to justice and fairness in law enforcement practices.
