The Executive Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area, Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, has urged residents of the council to take caution following the outbreak of cholera across 22 states of the federation including Lagos State.

In a statement on Wednesday, Gbadebo-Alogba confirmed that Ijede is one of the affected areas in the State.

She said, “Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) shows a rise in the number of suspected cases in Ikorodu and Ijede in particular.”

The council boss stressed the need for personal hygiene saying, “More than ever, we need to be conscious of our hygiene by washing our hands regularly with clean water and soap, and keep our surroundings clean, as cholera thrives in dirty environments.”

Gbadebo-Alogba advised against open defecation, indiscriminate waste disposal and called for frequent clearing of drainages.

She urged residents with cholera symptoms to seek medical attention. She said, “If you notice any of the symptoms of cholera, visit the nearest health care facility immediately for proper treatment.”

“While we enjoin ourselves to take responsibility by adhering to all safety protocols, we charge all health workers to lead the response in containing the spread of this disease,” she added.

The council boss assured the people of Ijede LCDA of the government’s support, saying, “As a government, we will do everything on our part to support the fight against cholera in Ijede LCDA by making available the necessary resources needed by the health workers. Our administration remains committed to the health and safety of the people.”
