The Awujale of Ijebuland and revered paramount ruler of the Ijebu people, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was on Monday laid to rest at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following his passing at the age of 91.

The late monarch, who sat on the throne for 65 years after ascending in 1960, was buried in a solemn and dignified ceremony conducted in accordance with traditional rites.

The final rites were held privately, but the atmosphere across the ancient town of Ijebu Ode was filled with grief and reverence as citizens paid tribute to a king.

Prominent dignitaries from across the country were in attendance to honour the revered king.

Among them were Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, and Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate).

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona’s reign is remembered for its blend of principled leadership and progressive reform.

He was widely respected for defending the autonomy and relevance of traditional institutions while modernising aspects of Ijebu society.

Under his leadership, the Ijebu nation gained significant visibility and influence in both Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

He was a vocal advocate for justice, fairness, and cultural preservation, and is credited with fostering unity and development in Ijebuland throughout his reign.

His death marks the end of a historic chapter in Yoruba monarchy, as Oba Adetona was not only one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Nigeria but also a towering figure in the country’s traditional and political landscape.

The Ogun State Government is expected to announce commemorative events in his honour in the coming days.
