Igbogbo Students’ Union Inaugurates New Leadership

To kick off its activities for the 2021 administrative year, Igogbo Students’ Union, on Saturday January 9, sworn in a new Executive Council led by the President, Comrade Adeniji Clinton and the Parliamentary Council led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Seyitan Ayanbola.

The event, which marked the 66th inauguration of the body, was attended by dignitaries, respected figures in Ikorodu Division and past leaders of the Union.

Delivering her keynote address titled ‘Prevailing health challenges (COVID-19 as a case study), a malady for leadership and productive performance’, Mrs. Abiola Ogunlewe, a medical practitioner, highlighted the facts and myths about the pandemic.

She emphasized the importance of good leadership in containing the spread of COVID-19, with references to the proactive handling of the pandemic by the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the failures of US President, Donald Trump in managing the situation. “COVID-19 is a test of leadership,” she said.

The newly inaugurated President, Comrade Adeniji Clinton, in his speech, said his administration’s main focus is to increase the literacy level in Igbogbo community through the facilitation of learning opportunities to young persons and even adults.

In his short remarks, Chief Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, CEO Kith and Kin Schools, urged the new union leaders to see their positions as an opportunity to serve the society, adding that “responsibility goes with leadership”. While the Executive Chairman Igbogbo-Bayeku LCDA, Builder Sesan Daini promised total support, collaboration and partnership with the student body.

During the panel session anchored by Comrade Olafare Comfort, the Executive Vice Chairman Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba admonished the gathering of students to be the very best in their respective endeavours. “Forget the sweet titles, the content you’re bringing to leadership is what matters,” she told the newly inaugurated leaders.

To Mayor Deen Sanwoola, Director General of iCARE Foundation, while speaking on the importance of community development, student unionism should be centered on giving back to the society, and solving problems. He then challenged the Union to be “radical and different” by initiating innovative ideas for societal good.

In the same vein, Mr Tolulope Faniyi, Chairman De Vanguard and a former President of the Union, said unionism gives self awareness and develop potentials, while imploring the Union to prioritize the institution.

Olawale, Proprietor Homat Group of Schools; Comrade Lekan Biliaminu Oba, Chairman National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter; Comrade Bisiriyu Samson, Executive Director, Ikorodu Division Youth Initiative; Ademola Bamigbade, immediate past Lagos State Youth Ambassador; Mrs Basirat Banjoko; Mr Shakiru Seidu; Mr Adeniji Taiwo, among others.
