Many Nigerians aren’t aware that not all police officers are the same in terms of departments and operations. Like its counterparts across the globe, the Nigerian Police Force has a number of special departments designed for special purposes.
One of such department is the Supernumerary Police alternatively called Spy Police. The unit was established to complement the services of the regular police officers. SPY police officers are usually deployed to serve at ministries, departments and agencies as well as multinational companies and banks upon their requests.
Interestingly, not only are SPY police officers different from the conventional ones in terms of rules of engagement, their uniforms are also different.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi made this known in a tweet on Friday.
He disclosed that while regular police officers wear black uniforms, their SPY counterparts are expected to wear an ash colour shirt — with SPY inscriptions all over it — and black pants.
Adejobi wrote, “There is need for the NPF to differentiate between the uniform of the SPY officers and conventional police officers as we can see in these 2 pix. SPY, supernumerary police officers are to be on ash colour shirt, with SPY inscriptions all over it, over black, with their shoulder badge with similar SPY inscriptions.
“Not to wear Black over black, or Neon blue over black or police camo. We are working round the clock to standardise the supernumerary scheme as well, so as to have a sharper demarcation between the SPY officers and conventional police, their rule of engagements and SOP.”

The clarification came against the background of the suspension of two female SPY police officers for discreditable conduct and violation of social media policy.
