In a development many Nigerians would consider shocking, President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly appointed his nephew, Sabiu Tunde Yusuf, as an assistant director at the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Peoples Gazette, in an exclusive report, disclosed that the president secretly inserted Yusuf — who served as a domestic aide to him — into the nation’s external intelligence outfit, despite glaring evidence that he lacked the required administrative experience to hold such crucial position.
Yusuf, who is the son of Buhari’s niece Hajia Halima who passed away in 2018, is his mid-30s. He is rumoured to be a close confidant of the President and one of the most influential persons in the State House.
His appointment, according to the said report, didn’t follow the laid down protocols. At least 16 years of career experience is required for the office, a criterion Yusuf failed to meet up with.
Sources said Buhari intentionally planted him in the NIA so Yusuf can be in charge of the agency when he leaves office in 2023, which further substantiates allegations of brazen nepotism levelled against the present adminstration.
Despite his Yoruba name “Tunde,” Yusuf does not speak Yoruba, and that he was named after Tunde Idiagbon, the deputy Head of State during the days of his Buhari-led military dictatorship between 1983 and 1985.
The Bayero University graduate, before his transfer to Aso Rock in 2015 following Buhari’s victory at the polls, was famous for selling call cards in his hometown Kaduna.
