The House of Representatives has issued an official statement addressing recent allegations of assault involving Representative Alex Ikwechegh (APGA, Abia).

Blackbox Nigeria earlier reported that Rep. Ikwechegh is accused of a physical altercation with e-hailing driver Stephen Abuwatseya and allegedly using threatening language. These accusations have drawn widespread public and media attention, leading the House to respond.

In a statement released by Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., the House spokesperson emphasized the seriousness with which the 10th Assembly approaches any actions that might compromise its commitment to ethical standards and accountability, both in public office and private conduct.

“The 10th Assembly, House of Representatives, takes these allegations very seriously. As elected officials, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability,” the statement reads.

The House affirmed that the matter has been submitted to the Nigeria Police for investigation, urging the public to allow due process to unfold. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have encouraged public feedback on the issue.

Reiterating its commitment to accountability, transparency, and ethical behavior, the House assured the public of further updates as the investigation progresses.

Background

Representative Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) representing Aba North & South Federal Constituency, recently came under public scrutiny following a viral video that allegedly captured him assaulting an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

The controversy began when Ikwechegh reportedly ordered snails from a vendor who hired Abuwatseya for delivery. Upon Abuwatseya’s arrival at the lawmaker’s residence, a disagreement ensued over where the delivery should take place.

Abuwatseya requested Ikwechegh come to his car for pickup, which reportedly escalated tensions, leading to a confrontation where Ikwechegh allegedly slapped the driver and made threats.

The incident has highlighted ethical concerns regarding lawmakers’ conduct outside the House, especially as citizens expect representatives to uphold high standards both in public and private.

This case isn’t the first time public officials have faced backlash for conduct outside their official capacities, yet it serves as a renewed reminder of the need for accountability and ethical behavior among elected leaders.

Public Reactions

Public reactions to the incident have been strong, with widespread criticism and calls for transparency. Many Nigerians see this as a critical test for the 10th Assembly, with expectations that the body will uphold the rule of law and hold members accountable.

The Assembly’s response, led by spokesperson Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., aims to reassure citizens of the House’s dedication to ethical standards and the importance of due process in resolving the matter.

This case may have broader implications for the Assembly’s image and its members’ accountability. Citizens hope that the House’s response will reinforce a culture of transparency, particularly as the country increasingly scrutinizes political leadership.

Meanwhile, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed Ikwechegh’s detainment, and the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation, pledging impartiality.
