Since Monday evening, popular microblogging platform, Twitter has been awash with a flurry of disturbing work stories shared by Nigerians as the hashtag #HorribleBosses currently tops the trend table.
These come in reaction to a report by tech-focused publication, TechCabal on the chaotic work culture at Nigerian payroll startup, Bento Africa and the maltreatment of employees (former and present) by the company’s CEO and co-founder, Ebun Okubanjo who has come under fire for his inhumane management style.
Seeing that the story exposed the tyranny and toxicity that characterize a number of Nigerian workplaces, netizens have since seized the opportunity to recount their traumatizing experience in the hands of their former employers.
See some of their reactions below:
I remember when I was on IT and my boss made me represent him in his kid’s PTA meeting.

3 trillion yrs ago, my boss at Oceanic Bank had me picking up assorted imported babes from the airport on Fridays.
Airport staff started calling me “PROTOCOL” once I showed up because I was always there.
Corporate Affairs was my job.
He took the ‘Affairs’ part very seriously. 😭— Big Debz ✨ (@RomeoProMax) March 21, 2022

I remember when I was robbed, the event was so traumatic that I had to call my HR so that it doesn't affect my work and her reply was "so? and you are still using your phone to call me". Omo, that broke me.
There are a number of #HorribleBosses but there are more terrible HRs.

Why are Nigerian tech startups like this? Imagine flying an employee to a different state for work and not making sure that everything would work out well which results to the employee being stranded😖😞#HorribleBosses

"ajebo schools" are very terrible. A friend of mine who was an assistant teacher was beaten by parents cos the child got home late due to traffic. The school owners still told my friend to apologize to the parents cos they don't want to lose customers. #HorribleBosses https://t.co/eRx4ZXDuv1
