Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 polls, has cautioned his supporters against making negative remarks about his ally actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo who dumped the party.

On Saturday, Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign, announced his departure from the party. He said Obi failed to show the leadership required to build a “solid party” that can defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His exit has sparked controversy within the party.

But in a statement on Monday morning, Obi described Okonkwo as his “beloved brother and trusted ally” and not “a mole” as suggested in some quarters.

He urged his supporters to refrain from discouragement or negative remarks towards Okonkwo or anyone who leaves or disagrees with their views.

“My message is clear and simple: unity, respect, and civility must prevail, even in the face of disagreement and variance,” he said.
