About four persons suspected to be involved in the assassination of Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moïse, were killed by the police in a gun battle, the county’s police chief has disclosed.
Moïse was, on Wednesday morning, assassinated at his home by a group of Spanish-speaking assailants according to a statement by the Prime Minister Claude Joseph.
The president’s wife, Martine Moise, was also injured by gunshot in the attack at around 1 a.m. local time at the couple’s home in the hills above Port-au-Prince. She was transported to a hospital in southern Florida for treatment, according to the statement.
At a news conference late Wednesday, the police chief, Léon Charles, said the police engaged in a battle with the assailants, noting that the authorities were still in pursuit of some suspects.
He also disclosed the release of three police officers initially held hostage.
“We are pursuing them so that, in a gunfight, they meet their fate or in gunfight they die, or we apprehend them,” he added.
