Group tasks Sanwo-Olu on urgent need to review Lagos youth policy

A non-governmental organization, the Youth Development Cluster Lagos has written an open letter to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the urgent need to review the Lagos State Youth Policy.

In the letter shared with BlackBox Nigeria, the group—comprising various youth organizations led by the Youth Alive Foundation—recalled that it had a one-on-one dialogue with the governor during his re-election bid campaign where the aforementioned issue was discussed.

“We were encouraged by your interest in this process and your commitment to ensuring its successful review and subsequently its implementation. Furthermore, we appreciate your directive to the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Honorable Olusegun Dawodu, to present a detailed report on the matter during the Executive Council meeting,” the letter reads in part.

“As you may be aware, the current youth policy in Lagos State was developed in 2016 during the administration of Governor Ambode. It was due for review in 2019, and yet the necessary review has not been made. This delay has had adverse consequences on the youth of Lagos State, who continue to face numerous challenges in various aspects of their lives.”

The group further highlighted statistics that underscores the importance of a comprehensive and updated youth policy.

It wrote, “According to recent surveys, the youth population in Lagos State comprises approximately 40% of the total population, with an estimated 6 million young people between the ages of 15 and 35. These numbers indicate a significant demographic that cannot be overlooked.

”Furthermore, studies have shown that a well-implemented youth policy leads to numerous benefits for society. It promotes youth employment, economic growth, social cohesion, and political stability. It provides opportunities for education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. By investing in our youth, we invest in the future of Lagos State.”

The group said while it is collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Social Development to provide technical support for the review process of the youth policy, it requires Sanwo-Olu’s support and commitment to scale the hurdles that may hinder the progress of the undertaking.

“Your Excellency, we firmly believe that the youth of Lagos State deserve a policy framework that aligns with their current realities and aspirations.

“We kindly request that you allocate the necessary resources and prioritize the review of the Lagos State Youth Policy. Adequate funding and timely implementation are paramount to address the current gaps and emerging needs of our youth. Your Excellency, your commitment to the welfare of the youth of Lagos State has been evident throughout your tenure. By expediting the review of the youth policy and ensuring its implementation, you will solidify your legacy as a leader who understands the value and potential of our young people,” the letter added.
