Ibadanland has marked another significant chapter in its storied tradition as Barrister Olumuyiwa Makinde, elder brother of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, has been elevated to the title of Gbonka Olubadan. This promotion now places him 17th in the Otun (civil) line of succession, bringing him closer to the revered Olubadan stool.

This elevation forms part of the customary process that follows the installation of a new Olubadan. With the enthronement of Oba Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, all chiefs in the succession line automatically advanced one step, in line with the city’s celebrated rotational and orderly system of traditional leadership.

Barr. Makinde’s steady rise highlights the Makinde family’s deep-rooted involvement in Ibadan’s civic and cultural life. His new position is seen as not just a personal achievement but a symbolic link between Oyo State’s present political leadership and the centuries-old custodianship of Ibadan’s monarchy.

He joins other influential figures who have also moved up in the latest round of promotions, including Hon. Akin Alabi, House of Representatives member and founder of NairaBet, who now holds the title of Bada Olubadan (No. 20), and Senator Teslim Folarin, a political heavyweight and three-term senator, who has risen to Agbakin Olubadan (No. 14).

Together, these promotions underscore Ibadan’s unique ability to merge politics, law, and public service with tradition, creating a leadership structure that continues to inspire confidence among its people. For many indigenes, this blending of modern governance and ancient heritage is a sign that the city’s traditional stool will remain a source of stability, dignity, and pride for generations to come.
