Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has appointed his nephew and globally celebrated Afrobeats artist, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the newly established Osun State Sports Trust Fund.
The appointment, which has stirred reactions across the state and beyond, was revealed during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun chapter, to the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, in Osogbo.
According to Adewusi, Davido’s nomination came directly from Governor Adeleke, who expressed strong confidence in his nephew’s global influence and capacity to attract private-sector investments to revive sports in the state.
“The governor is proud of his nephew and believes that his reach, passion for youth empowerment, and love for Osun will bring value to the sports sector,” the deputy governor stated.
Davido, who accepted the appointment without hesitation, is expected to lead efforts in sourcing funding, mobilizing support, and rebranding Osun’s sports landscape.
The Sports Trust Fund will support infrastructural development, talent discovery, and strategic partnerships in athletics and other sporting ventures.
The move is part of Governor Adeleke’s broader youth-centered policy agenda, which includes the planned establishment of a Sports Commission and the revamp of major sporting facilities such as the Osogbo Township Stadium.
While some observers have raised questions over perceived nepotism, others argue that Davido’s global stature and philanthropic track record make him uniquely suited to deliver results.
The Trust Fund is expected to launch fully in the coming weeks.
