A solid gold toilet worth €1million has been stolen from Blenheim Palace.

This was confirmed on the United Kingdom’s Evening Standard website when the Thames Valley police said that the 18-carat lavatory, created by Italian artist, Maurizio Cattelan, was taken by a gang during an overnight break-in at around 4.50am this morning.

The artwork, titled “America”, has not yet been found but a 66-year-old man has been arrested.

Det Insp Jess Milne said that “The piece of art stolen is a high-value toilet made out of gold that was on display at the palace.

“Due to the toilet being plumed in to the building, this has caused significant damage and flooding.

“we believe a group of offenders used at least two vehicles during the offence.

“The artwork has not been recovered at this time but we are conducting a thorough investigation to find it and bring those responsible to justice”.

The fully-functioning throne was opened for public use on Thursday and was due to remain at the Oxfordshire stately home until October 27.
