Former Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has spoken out on the sentencing of former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and medical doctor Obinna Obeta, by the Old Bailey, London’s Central Criminal Court, on Friday.
In a tweet, Sani said: “Senator Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and Obinna; the UK Court is done, and the Lord shall see you through.”
The trio received jail sentences for organ trafficking under the Modern Slavery Act, following their conviction in March, which lasted for six weeks.
Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months, while his wife Beatrice and Obinna Obeta were given four and 10 years jail terms, respectively.
According to reports, Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and Obeta were found guilty of conspiring to arrange the travel of a young Nigerian man, David Nwamini, to Britain in order to exploit him for his kidney.
The organ was intended for Ekweremadu’s sick daughter, Sonia.
This case has been described as the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act, with Judge Molyneux saying that the sentences were intended to send a message to others who might consider such criminal behavior.
The judge also noted that the three defendants had shown no remorse for their actions.
