An Ilesa Magistrate Court in Osun State has awarded ₦150,000 in damages to Olapitan Sola after his girlfriend, Rhoda Adu, failed to fulfill a visit she promised, despite receiving ₦3,000 for transport fare according to a report by century newspaper.
The dispute began when Sola sent Rhoda the transport fare with the expectation of meeting her. However, Rhoda failed to show up and subsequently switched off her phone, leaving Sola unable to contact her. Feeling deceived, Sola reported the matter to the police at Ayeso Police Station, leading to Rhoda’s arrest and trial.
During the hearing, Sola presented evidence, including transaction records and their WhatsApp messages, to substantiate his claims of being defrauded. He further argued that Rhoda’s actions caused him emotional pain and financial loss.
In her judgement, Magistrate Akogun Oludare stated that Rhoda’s actions constituted a breach of trust. She was ordered to refund the ₦3,000 and pay an additional ₦100,000 for breach of agreement and ₦50,000 as damages for emotional distress.
The court highlighted the need for accountability in interpersonal agreements, noting that the ruling was meant to discourage dishonest behavior.
