Billed to hold next month, the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is perhaps the most anticipated event in the Nigerian political arena. So far, a number of political bigwigs in the ruling party have indicated interest in securing its ticket to contest for the presidency in 2023.
It is an open secret that Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is in the race. Recall that after months of speculations surrounding his ambition, he formally announced his presidential bid, pitching him against his former boss, ex-Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who had earlier declared his intent to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, Osinbajo isn’t the only politician from Ogun State eyeing the nation’s top seat.
On Wednesday, a former governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun disclosed his interest in the 2023 presidential race.
Amosun, who represents Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate, made this known in a letter read out by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, at Wednesday’s plenary.
The ex-governor revealed that his official declaration ceremony will take place on May 5 at the Yar’ Adua Centre, Abuja.
Also in the race is a former of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole. According to The Nation, the ex-lawmaker in the coming week will purchase the presidential expression of interest and nomination forms of the APC.
Bankole, who joined the ruling party in 2021, is said to have met various stakeholders of the party and gotten their support to jostle for the presidential ticket at the forthcoming APC primaries.
