Fresh headache for ‘Eleyi of Ogun State’ as Adebutu picks Amosun’s ally as running mate

Fresh headache for ‘Eleyi of Ogun State’ as Adebutu picks Amosun’s ally as running mate

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu has announced Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade as his running mate for the 2023 general elections.

Akinlade was the flagbearer of the Allied Progressives Movement (APM) in the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state. He had failed to secure the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The former member of the House of Representatives is a known ally of ex-Ogun governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Announcing Akinlade’s nomination in a tweet on Friday, Adebutu said he shares a lot of qualities in common with his running mate.

“I am delighted to announce officially, the nomination of Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade as my running mate for the 2023 general elections, to the leaders of our party, our teeming members of the Peoples Democratic Party, and the good people of Ogun State,” he wrote.

“We both share a lot of qualities in common and served together in the 8th National Assembly. I am confident that he is a forthright and loyal gentleman with indelible character. I am convinced that he will surely be committed to our vision of sharing a pedigree of prosperity.”

This development, according to observers, might hurt the re-election bid of incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun. There are strong indications that the duo of Adebutu and Akinlade, both influential political figures in the state, will do everything possible to kick Abiodun — who has been nicknamed the ‘Eleyi of Ogun State’ — out of office in 2023.
