Former Xabi Alonso has emerged as a leading contender to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool FC, with reports suggesting the Spaniard is open to taking over at Anfield.
Multiple reports on Wednesday indicate that Liverpool have identified Alonso as a preferred option should they decide to part ways with Slot at the end of the season.
According to sources cited by Sport Bild and other outlets, the former midfielder is “ready” to step into the role if approached formally.
Alonso’s agent has also confirmed that there has been contact from Liverpool, further fuelling speculation about a potential return to the club where he enjoyed a successful playing career.
The development comes amid mounting pressure on Slot following a dip in Liverpool’s form this season. The club has struggled in the Premier League and faces uncertainty over Champions League qualification, despite still competing in other competitions.
While no final decision has been taken, reports suggest Liverpool’s hierarchy are considering their options but are reluctant to make an immediate managerial change while the season is still ongoing.
Alonso, who previously managed Bayer Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten domestic double and had a brief stint at Real Madrid, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
His strong connection to Liverpool and tactical profile have made him a popular choice among fans and pundits.
Despite the growing speculation, Liverpool have not officially confirmed any move to replace Slot, and the Dutch manager remains in charge as the club pushes to finish the season strongly.
The situation is expected to develop in the coming weeks as the club evaluates its long-term direction.
