Chief Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, renowned mathematician and former Governor of the old Oyo State, has died. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 6, 2025, just days before his 90th birthday.
Born in 1935, Olunloyo was a child prodigy whose brilliance in mathematics earned him international acclaim. He studied in some of the world’s leading institutions and became widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most intellectually gifted individuals.
He entered public service early and was appointed Commissioner for Economic Development in the Western Region in his thirties. In 1983, he served as Governor of Oyo State during Nigeria’s Second Republic. Although his administration was cut short by the military coup later that year, it is remembered for its emphasis on meritocracy, strategic planning, and sound governance.
Olunloyo was also a respected cultural figure, holding traditional titles such as Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ile-Ife. He remained active in intellectual and public life well into his old age, frequently sharing insights on national development, politics, and education.
In reaction to the news, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde issued a heartfelt tribute:
“We are saddened by the passing of His Excellency Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo this morning, just days before his 90th birthday. Baba was a brilliant mind, a renowned mathematician. He will be remembered for his selfless contributions to the development of Oyo State and Nigeria.
“I have directed that flags be flown at half mast for one week as we mourn him as a former Governor of Oyo State.
“I am honoured to have had the privilege to know him and benefit from his wise counsel. He will be sorely missed.
“May Baba’s soul rest in peace and may God grant his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, scholars, and traditional rulers across the country. Many described him as a symbol of excellence, service, and intellectual depth.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Olunloyo family in the coming days.
