Former Nigerian Interim Leader, Ernest Shonekan Dies At 85 In Lagos Hospital
Chief Ernest Shonekan, who headed the Interim National Government that succeeded the junta of General Ibrahim Babangida, has been confirmed dead.
Report has it that Shonekan died in the early hours of Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in Lekki area of Lagos. He was aged 85.
Details about the cause of his death are still sketchy at the time of filing this report.
The lawyer and business magnate was the interim head of the Nigerian Government between August 26 1993 after Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida stepped down from government. He held on to the position until November 17 1993 when he was ousted in a coup led by late General Sanni Abacha.
Before his foray into politics, Shonekan was the chairman and chief executive of the United African Company of Nigeria, a vast business conglomerate.
He hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State. Chief Shonekan had his early education at the popular CMS Grammar School and Igbobi College in Lagos before moving to University of London where he bagged his degree in Law.
