The autopsy performed on former Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Segun, also known as “Success,” has revealed that he died from sudden cardiac arrest during a boxing match in Accra, Ghana, last Saturday.

According to the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and West African Boxing Union President, Remi Aboderin, the preliminary post-mortem results indicated cardiac arrest as the cause of death.

However, further investigation into his heart condition is required before his body can be released.

Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, collapsed during a bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The 40-year-old boxer had an extensive career since making his debut in 2019, competing in 24 professional fights with 13 wins (12 by knockout), nine losses, and two draws.

The boxing community is still reeling from Olanrewaju’s tragic death, sparking calls for more rigorous health screenings for athletes before high-stakes bouts.
