Former Minister of Education, Senator Jibril Aminu, Dies at 85

Former Nigerian Minister of Education and senator, Professor Jibril Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85.

He died on Wednesday in Abuja after a prolonged illness.

Professor Aminu, a revered statesman, medical doctor, and diplomat, served Nigeria in various high-profile capacities throughout his illustrious career.

A trained cardiologist, he was widely respected for his intellect, discipline, and commitment to public service.

He was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States between 1999 and 2003, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening diplomatic ties during a crucial period of democratic transition.

Following his ambassadorial tenure, he was elected as senator representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District, a position he held from 2003 to 2011.

Before his diplomatic and legislative roles, Professor Aminu also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education, where he was instrumental in shaping national education policies and advocating for reforms in the sector.

He is survived by two wives and nine children.

Tributes have begun to pour in from across the country, as former colleagues, political figures, and academics remember him as a man of integrity and profound national service.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
