Billy Vigar, a promising young forward and former Arsenal youth player, has tragically passed away following a severe brain injury he sustained on the pitch. He was 21.
Vigar was playing for Chichester City in an Isthmian League Premier Division match against Wingate & Finchley when the injury occurred. The match was abandoned just 13 minutes in after he collapsed after hitting a concrete wall near the pitch while attempting to keep the ball in play.
He was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma. On Tuesday, he underwent surgery in a bid to save him, but he passed away on the morning of September 25, 2025, as his family and supporters looked on.
Vigar’s football journey began in Arsenal’s youth academy, which he joined at age 14 in December 2017. He signed professional terms with the club in 2022 but never made a senior appearance. During his career, he also spent time on loan at Derby County U21 and Eastbourne Borough, before moving to Hastings United and later Chichester City.
In a statement, Chichester City FC expressed deep sorrow and asked for privacy for Vigar’s family as they deal with the devastating loss. The club also postponed its next fixture as a mark of respect. Arsenal likewise paid tribute, praising his determination and versatility.
His death has prompted tributes across the football community. Chichester City and other clubs will observe a minute’s silence and players will wear black armbands during upcoming matches.
Billy Vigar’s sudden passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life, especially in sport. He had shown great promise and passion.
