FIFA President Gianni Infantino has congratulated Senegal on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title following their victory over hosts Morocco in the final played in Rabat, while strongly condemning scenes of violence that marred the end of the match.
In a statement shared on his official social media platform, Infantino hailed Senegal for being crowned champions of Africa and extended his best wishes to the President of the Senegalese Football Federation, Abdoulaye Fall, as well as all those involved in the team’s success. He also praised Morocco for their impressive performance throughout the tournament, describing the Atlas Lions as worthy runners-up and exceptional hosts.
The FIFA president expressed appreciation to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI for his continued support for football, and commended Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and a FIFA Council member, for his leadership and commitment to the development of the game.
However, Infantino expressed concern over what he described as “unacceptable scenes” witnessed both on the pitch and in the stands after the final. He condemned the behaviour of some supporters, as well as certain Senegalese players and members of the technical crew, stating that leaving the field of play in such a manner and engaging in violence has no place in football.
He stressed the importance of respecting match officials and their decisions, both on and off the field, noting that teams must always compete within the Laws of the Game to protect the integrity and essence of football.
Infantino further reminded players and teams of their responsibility to act responsibly and set a positive example for fans in stadiums and millions watching around the world. He said the ugly scenes witnessed during the final must never be repeated and reiterated that such conduct has no place in the sport.
The FIFA president added that he expects the relevant disciplinary bodies at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to take appropriate measures in response to the incidents.
Despite the controversy, Senegal’s AFCON victory remains a historic achievement, while the tournament has once again highlighted Africa’s growing influence on the global football stage.
