The Federal Executive Council (FEC), led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has scrapped the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Ministry of Sports Development.
In their place, a new Ministry of Regional Development will oversee regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North West Development Commission (NWDC), South West Development Commission (SWDC), and North East Development Commission (NEDC).
Also, the National Sports Commission will assume responsibilities of the former Ministry of Sports Development, while the Ministry of Tourism will merge with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.
This move comes after a proposed bill for regional government in Nigeria, drafted by Dr. Akin Fapohunda, according to sources generated significant buzz few months ago.
The bill aimed to introduce a new governance model, dividing Nigeria into eight geo-political regions with defined interim boundaries
However, it was later revealed that the bill was not officially presented to President Tinubu, and the House of Representatives denied its existence.
