The Federal Government has approved the inclusion of Chinese language, Mandarin, into the curriculum of senior secondary schools across Nigeria.

The decision follows a recent review of the national curriculum, aimed at strengthening the teaching and learning of international languages and preparing Nigerian students for global opportunities.

Mandarin will now join other recognized foreign languages taught at the senior secondary level, with the Federal Ministry of Education noting that the move is part of Nigeria’s commitment to deepening international relations and cultural exchange.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja, officials explained that the inclusion of Mandarin is designed to expose Nigerian students to wider career and educational prospects. They added that the initiative also reflects the growing economic and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and China.

The new curriculum will enable schools to create structured platforms for learning the Chinese language and culture, while teachers are expected to undergo specialized training to support effective implementation.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the decision, stressing that proficiency in Mandarin could give Nigerian students a competitive edge in technology, trade, and international collaboration in the years ahead.
