FG Dispels Rumors of Scrapping JSS, SSS in Nigerian Educational Sector

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a clarification regarding recent reports that suggested the scrapping of Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) systems in Nigeria.
The ministry reassured the public that these claims were untrue and stemmed from a misunderstanding of a proposal presented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during the Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting held on February 6, 2025, in Abuja.
In a statement released by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Ministry, the ministry clarified that the Minister had only presented a proposal to transition to a 12-year compulsory basic education system, which would maintain the current 6-3-3 structure.
The proposal aims to simplify the educational process by removing the examination barrier between JSS and SSS, allowing students to progress smoothly without external assessments during this phase.
The Ministry further emphasized that the proposal is still under review and no immediate policy changes have been made.
They assured that the National Council on Education will review the proposal carefully before making a final decision, which will be announced in October 2025 after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including state governments, education policymakers, teachers, and parents.
“The ministry strongly urges the public to disregard the false reports claiming that JSS and SSS have been scrapped,” the statement read.
“The Federal Government remains committed to policies that will improve access to quality education and align with global best practices,” the statement added.
