The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London.
This was made known in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, on Monday through the ministry’s official X handle.
The decision, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period.
According to the statement, the holiday is intended as a mark of respect for the late leader’s “service to the nation, contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and enduring legacy in governance and national development.”
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.
He further urged Nigerians to honour the late President’s memory by embracing peace, patriotism, and national unity.
The late president is scheduled to be buried on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, with his remains expected to arrive in the country earlier that day.
The burial is expected to be attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, foreign dignitaries, and thousands of mourners.
As part of the official mourning activities, national flags are flying at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government extended its deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of the former leader’s soul.
