Almost thirty years after his death, Fela Anikulapo Kuti continues to stand as one of Africa’s most influential cultural figures. Known for his fearless criticism of authority and the creation of Afrobeat music, Fela’s impact has grown, influencing generations of musicians and activists all over the world.

In June 2025, Fela made history once again when his classic 1976 album Zombie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This made him the first Nigerian artist ever to receive such an honor. Zombie, a powerful protest album that attacked military oppression in Nigeria, remains one of the most influential albums in African music history.

Fela Kuti was more than a musician. He was a political activist who used music to fight corruption, injustice, and bad leadership. He believed that music is the weapon of the future, and he used it to speak truth to power.

Every year in October, fans from around the world gather in Lagos for Felabration, a week long festival celebrating Fela’s life, music, and message. In 2024, the festival was filled with performances from both veteran artists and rising stars. Held at the New Afrika Shrine a cultural venue built by Fela’s children it remains a powerful reminder of Fela’s influence.

More than just music, Felabration includes debates, art shows, and street parades, keeping Fela’s activism alive for a new generation.

Fela’s music continues to inspire artists across the globe. His songs have been sampled by stars like Beyonce and J. Cole, and his life story has been told on Broadway and in documentaries. His messages about African unity, freedom, and justice still resonate with people fighting against injustice today.

Even outside Nigeria, Fela is recognized as a symbol of resistance, freedom, and truth. From concerts in New York to festivals in Europe, his music continues to travel, and his story continues to be told.
