The Federal Government of Nigeria has installed surveillance cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge to monitor traffic and enforce speed limits.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that these Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, both on and beneath the bridge, will soon be officially inaugurated. He emphasized that the footage from these cameras will be monitored remotely, including from Abuja, allowing authorities to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and take swift action against violators.

The CCTV cameras are part of effort to enhance security and traffic management on one of West Africa’s longest bridges. With over-speeding being a significant concern, the government is also exploring the installation of speed bumps as a potential measure to curb reckless driving.

However, Minister Umahi cautioned that speed bumps could lead to traffic congestion and increase delays, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits to avoid such drastic measures.

In addition to monitoring the Third Mainland Bridge, the government has extended the scope of its surveillance efforts to the nearby Falomo area. Streetlights and additional CCTV cameras have been installed along this stretch.

The installation of CCTV cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and promote safety on key roads across Nigeria.
