FCT High Court Sentence 23 Years Old To Death Over Theft Of Smartphone

An High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has sentence one Tope Abiodun to death by hanging after the young man has been held in Kuje prison for four years.

Justice Chizoba Orji of the Apo High Court sentenced the 23-year-old for stealing an Android LG phone which was valued at N87,000 four years ago.

Don Capello, an helper who assisted Tope who has been in detention in Kuje Prison pushed for his case to be heard in Court but was surprised at the judgement.

Tope, an indigene of Kabba, Kogi State was reported to have stolen the phone sometimes in 2013 so as to use the proceeds to buy foods for his younger ones.

Mr Capello has since taken to his social media to register his displeasure over the judgement. See his post below…

“This is unfair to the poor and vulnerable masses. Tope fluently speaks Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa languages.

“He has transformed since he was imprisoned four years ago, this is a lad that will assist visitors with their luggage down to cells of those they came to visit in Kuje prison.

“He is a good boy we cannot allow to die. I am appealing to well-meaning Nigerians, clergies alike to come to his aid. He has an ageing mother, he was not born to see his father alive. One can easily understand his upbringing.”
