In 2016, the Senate passed the Sexual Harasment Institution Bill, which provides for a five-year jail term for lecturers convicted of sexually harassing male or female students.
The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo Agege, current deputy president of the senate, proposed a fine of N5million in the alternative.
The bill also made provisions for lecturers and educators who may be falsely accused by their students to initiate processes by which students could be punished for false accusation.
There was, however, no concurrence by the House of Representatives so the bill did so see the light of day as ASUU also kicked against it, claiming the bill undermines University autonomy in all intents.
