The PDP candidate had arrived at the venue of the debate only to discover that the incumbent president and candidate of the All Progressives Party was not attending. He then took to Twitter to announce that he was not staying saying “we came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar cannot challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies.”

Neither Buhari nor Atiku were part of the debate last night

He tweeted further “Afterall, you cannot shave a man’s head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is NOT here to defend himself.”

The former Vice President also went on to challenge President Buhari to another debate.

“I however challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well,” he posted on his twitter account.

Atiku Abubakar had initially traveled in from the US to attend the debate

The former Vice President who is contesting for president for the second time has however come under heavy criticism over his decision to walk away from the debate.

Former Presidential candidate of KOWA Party and French Professor, Remi Sonaiya has disagreed with Atiku saying his decision to walk out of the debate was “so disrespectful and inconsiderate.”

Professor Sonaiya further tweeted that “Debates are for candidates to present themselves to the electorate,” while directly responding to Atiku’s tweet about not participating due to the incumbent’s absence. She asked Atiku what would have happened if the current president had used his 8-year chance of being president and was not a contestant in the election.

“But what if the incumbent had already spent 8 years and was no longer qualified to run? Would a debate then be unnecessary or useless? Debates are for candidates to present themselves to the electorate, Sir! #2019Debate”

“That’s so disrespectful and inconsiderate! So many people had been looking forward to listening to him. So, that didn’t matter?”

In the same vein, the Enough is Enough, a coalition of young Nigerians also criticised the President and his main challenger for not debating.

“We have hosted/co-hosted or funded 16 debates since 2011.

A debate is not just a platform to spar with your opponent but a place to make your case to the people of #Nigeria.

Buhari and Atiku have disrespected Nigerian citizens this evening.”
