Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came on Saturday during an interview on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports with Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami, where she confirmed her return to active politics after about 15 years away from frontline public office.
Prof. Obasanjo, who previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health and later represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, said she decided to join the APC following widespread encouragement from supporters across the state.
She described the ruling party as her “natural home” and ruled out any plans to return to the Senate, stressing that her focus is solely on winning the governorship race.
Her entry into the contest is expected to shape the early dynamics of the 2027 electoral landscape in Ogun, a state where political activity is beginning to intensify with the next general elections more than a year away.
