Donatus Mathew, a former motorcycle rider who rose to prominence by winning a seat in the House of Representatives, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mathew, who represents the Kaura Federal Constituency in Southern Kaduna, gained prominence in the 2023 elections by defeating Gideon Gwani, a four-term lawmaker and Minority Chief Whip from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His victory, seen as a major upset, symbolized hope for many in the constituency.
The defection has sparked criticism, with activist Stephen Kefason voicing his frustration on X (formerly Twitter): “This okada rider rode on Peter Obi’s wave to win in Kaura and has now joined APC. He has achieved nothing in office – no bills, no motions.”
The move raises questions about Mathew’s political future and how it will impact his relationship with his constituents.
