A former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has been charged with conspiracy to harvest organs in the United Kingdom.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the 60-year-old politician and his 55-year-old wife, Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, both conspired to bring a child to the UK with the intention to harvest organs.

“The charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team,” the police said in a statement on Thursday.

“[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.”

Charges were brought against the couple, following an investigation which was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

The police added that the child involved has been safeguarded.

Ekweremadu and his wife have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge magistrates court later on Thursday.
