The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was confirmed on Friday by the Enugu APC Caretaker Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who disclosed that Governor Mbah’s formal defection will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in Enugu.
According to Nwoye, the event will also feature the defection of several key political figures, including federal and state lawmakers, members of the Enugu State Executive Council, and ward and local government leaders across the state.
“Governor Peter Mbah will be officially received into the APC on Tuesday, alongside other prominent leaders from across Enugu State,” Nwoye told journalists.
The announcement comes just a day after the APC National Working Committee (NWC) dissolved the Enugu State Working Committee (SWC) over internal disputes and appointed a seven-member caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs in the state.
Governor Mbah’s defection adds momentum to the APC’s growing influence nationwide, following similar moves by Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who both left the PDP earlier this year.
During the earlier defection ceremonies in Uyo and Asaba, the former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, hinted that more opposition governors and senior political figures were preparing to join the ruling party.
The political shift in Enugu follows that of Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, who defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the APC on October 8.
His move increased the APC’s representation in the Senate to 73 seats, giving the party a two-thirds majority in the 109-member chamber.
The current Senate composition stands as follows: APC (73), PDP (28), LP (4), APGA (2), SDP (1), and NNPP (1).
Governor Mbah’s move is expected to further consolidate APC’s presence in the Southeast and reshape the region’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
