The Lagos State Government might have to offer more than an apology to the Uber driver who was assaulted during Wednesday’s EndSARS memorial protest, Mr Adedotun Clement.
Recall BlackBox Nigeria reported that the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LSNA) in a statement, tendered an unreserved apology for the conduct of its officers towards the driver, adding that it has sanctioned those involved in the incident.
However, Clement has demanded the sum of N500 million as compensation from the Lagos State Government.
Explaining the reason for the compensation demanded, he stated that the funds would atone for the Neighbourhood officers’ assault on him during the ENDSARS protest on October 20, 2021.
The driver, through a statement released by his lawyer, Inibene Effiong, on Friday, also rejected the punishment of suspension meted out to the officers as he demanded that a stiffer punishment be taken against the officers who assaulted him.
“While we commend the Lagos State Government for admitting that the conduct of its agents was criminal and unprofessional, we find the two months suspension meted on the two officers grossly insufficient and unacceptable. It is not a deterrence. The officers should be dismissed and diligently prosecuted in a court of law to serve as a deterrence to others,” he said.
Clement added that the LNSA officers should be prosecuted in court in accordance with the Anti-Torture Act and the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
