Ghazali Ibrahim
The Emir of Gusau, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has died at the age of 71 following a protracted illness.
He passed away on Friday in Abuja, bringing to an end a decade-long reign marked by dedication to public service and traditional leadership.
Dr. Bello, who became the 16th Emir of Gusau on March 16, 2015, following the death of his father, was a seasoned civil servant before ascending the throne.
He rose through the ranks to become a Permanent Secretary in the old Sokoto and Zamfara State civil service, a position he held with distinction before his coronation.
His death was confirmed by Sulaiman Idis, spokesperson to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” the governor said in a condolence statement.
Governor Lawal described the late monarch as a supportive royal father and a capable leader whose reign significantly impacted Zamfara and northern Nigeria at large.
“His Highness’s passing is a huge loss for the people of Zamfara State, as well as for the North and Nigeria as a whole. The late royal father dedicated 10 years of serving the people… He led with commitment, dedication, and a strong sense of faith,” the governor said.
The Emir, according to the governor, was not only a leader but also a personal confidant and father figure whose wisdom helped guide the affairs of the state.
“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guides me and other state leaders. May the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah,” Lawal added.
The governor extended condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the Gusau Emirate Council, and the Emir’s immediate and extended family, calling for prayers for the repose of his soul.
Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Gusau Emirate in accordance with Islamic rites.
Dr. Ibrahim Bello’s death marks the end of an era for Gusau, where he was widely respected for his humility, administrative experience, and commitment to peace and development in Zamfara State.
