Embattled cop Abba Kyari drags FG to court over detention in NDLEA custody

Amid serious allegations of his drug links, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, on Monday, dragged the Federal Government before a Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge his continued detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to The PUNCH, Kyari, in his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/182/22, is seeking an order from the court to compel the anti-narcotics agency to grant him bail on health grounds.

In an ex-parte application argued by his counsel, Cynthia Obianuju Ikena, the embattled cop claimed to be suffering from chronic diabetes threatening his life and therefore needs urgent medical attention.

However, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja while taking the ex-parte application filed along with the suit refused to order the Federal Government to release Abba Kyari from custody.

Instead, the judge ordered that the suspended police officer put the Federal Government on notice of the existence of the suit he instituted against it.

The judge ordered him to go and serve all processes he filed on the Federal Government.

Justice Ekwo held that all the averments and allegations made against the Federal Government are so weighty that the court must give the government opportunity to hear from it before taking any step. He thereafter adjourned the case till Thursday, February 24.

Recall that on February 14, the NDLEA declared Kyari wanted over allegations of his links with an international drug cartel. Hours later, he was arrested alongside four others by the police and later transferred to the NDLEA custody.

Before his latest ordeal, the decorated ‘super cop’ had been indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a $1.1 million scam over his alleged collaboration with a self-confessed international fraudster, Hushpuppi.

Though he had denied the allegations, the embattled cop was relieved of his appointment as the officer in charge of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
