The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two Chinese nationals, Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, along with two Nigerians, Donatus Agupusi and Michael Benneth Agu, for attempting to export solid minerals without the necessary permit.
The arrests were made by operatives from the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC. Jiang was detained at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after authorities discovered suspicious stones, believed to be solid minerals, concealed in his luggage during a routine hold baggage screening. Agupusi and Agu were later arrested at the EFCC’s Enugu office.
The arrests followed intelligence received by the EFCC from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on November 3, 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that Agupusi, the owner of Great Wall Construction Limited, employed the other suspects. Further investigation disclosed that Jiang intended to transport the minerals to China for testing purposes, but none of the suspects had the required export permit for the minerals.
The EFCC has confirmed that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
