Edo Governorship: PDP Chairman, Candidate Refuse to Sign Peace Accord

The Edo State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, and the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, boycotted the peace accord signing organized by the National Peace Committee on Thursday.

The event, attended by prominent figures including former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Inspector-General of Police Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, and INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, aimed to promote peaceful elections in the September 21 Edo State governorship poll.

Despite initially approaching the podium to sign the accord, Aziegbemi and Ighodalo protested to Bishop Matthew Kukah and Gen. Abubakar, citing unspecified conditions that must be met before signing.

Gen. Abubakar revealed that the PDP leaders would instead travel to Abuja to sign the accord once their conditions are met.

This development follows Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki’s statement on Wednesday that the PDP might not sign the peace accord due to concerns about police bias towards the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aziegbemi had earlier raised concerns about the deployment of associates of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to key electoral positions in Edo.
