Supporters, officials and boxers of Team Ogun, in what appeared to be a planned violence, went wild on Tuesday following their defeat by Team Lagos in the boxing event at the National Sports Festival in Edo State.
BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the situation was largely caused by a decision that went against one of their pugilists.
The fight between Lagos boxer, Shittu Afolabi and Kasali Abayomi in the 52kg category ended in 3-2 referee decision in favour of the Lagos boxer, due to what could be described as Abayomi’s technical prowess during the fight that lasted three rounds.
Team Ogun couldn’t pocket the loss. Consequently, they descended on the referees and other boxing officials, throwing chairs, tables and other dangerous weapons in the process.
This violence happened in the presence of the State Commissioner for Sports seated as one of the special guests.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that normalcy has been restored at the venue, Oba Okenzua Cultural Centre in Benin, due to the intervention of security operatives.
Team Lagos, however, remained calm while things played out. They won gold medal in that weight category.
