It appears the cold war between Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Rauf Olaniyan has taken a new dimension after Makinde dropped the latter as his running mate, ahead of the 2023 gubernatorial elections.
In Olaniyan’s place, the governor who recently clinched the second term ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, picked the Chairman of the State Housing Corporation, Bayo Lawal.
This came after speculations about possible replacement for the embattled deputy governor.
Makinde’s new running mate hails from Irepo Local Government Area of the state. Lawal served as Attorney-General of Oyo State under the administration of former Governor Lam Adesina.
Report has it the governor and his deputy have been in a frosty relationship, fuelling speculations that Olaniyan may dump the PDP.
The All Progressives Congress was reportedly also wooing the deputy governor with the promise to hand him a senatorial ticket. Olaniyan, however, insisted that he wasn’t leaving the PDP.
