As part of a major rebrand, social media giant Facebook on Thursday announced the change of its corporate name to Meta.
The development, though unsurprising, comes days after media reports that the company is likely to opt for a new name — following recent scandals based on documents leaked by its former employee.
Predictably, the announcement of the name change had caused frenzy on social media as many users of Facebook-controlled apps wondered if it would affect them.
However, the company board has said that individual applications such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will not be affected in relation to the change of name, adding that it only applies to the parent company.
“I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they’re not changing,” Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg also said in a statement.
